The Nationals Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, has urged the State Government to move now to prevent another fire at the Hazelwood mine.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Mr Cameron asked the Minister for Emergency Services what is being done to ensure Latrobe Valley residents don’t have to endure a second catastrophic mine fire.
“February will mark 10 years since the Latrobe Valley endured its darkest period. For 45 days the region was shrouded in smoke, and ash rained from the skies as a fire in the Hazelwood mine raged out of control,” Mr Cameron said.
“Some residents tried to flee, others were forced to stay indoors, and the air quality was so poor that people immediately began suffering adverse health effects.
“A decade on, the memories, scars, and health impacts caused by the mine fire are still present.
“Latrobe Valley residents are proud and resilient, but no community should have to suffer through such a catastrophic event.
“As we brace for another dry and hot summer, there are concerns about the possibility of another fire in the Hazelwood mine.
“My office has been contacted by people raising a number of concerns, including access to the mine for emergency services, the stability of the batters and the prevalence of exposed coal.
“The mine is currently partially filled with water, but any exposed coal – particularly during a long hot summer – poses a grave fire risk.
“Minister, what is being done to combat fire risk at the Hazelwood mine and prevent another mine fire from occurring?”
The Minister is required to respond within 30 days.
