The Nationals’ Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, has blasted the Allan Labor Government for its negligence as Moe residents continue to go without critical road safety improvements.
Upgrades were promised for the intersection at Waterloo Road and Lloyd Street six years ago, but Labor has still not broken ground on the project despite acknowledging it poses an unacceptable risk to road users.
On when the project will begin, Minister for Roads, Gabrielle Williams, gave the same evasive response she has provided to this question for the last three years.
“It’s been six years since Labor promised these upgrades and the Minister says they are still in the design phase – that’s simply not good enough,” Mr Cameron said.
“More than 13,500 vehicles cross the train tracks at Waterloo Road and Lloyd Street every day, and there have been at least three serious crashes at the intersection in the last two years.
“Vehicles, including trucks and buses, frequently queue short-stacked across the train tracks, and it is no exaggeration to say this current intersection is a complete death-trap.
“This city-centric Labor Government loves to tell us it has removed 88 level crossings in Melbourne, but it goes missing every time when it comes to this intersection in the Latrobe Valley.
“I have raised the issue of this intersection in Parliament 11 times, and still the Minister for Roads can’t grasp the urgency of finishing these upgrades.
“I’m repeatedly told Labor will ‘continue to keep the community updated’ about this project, but they’re not being updated at all, which is why I’m inundated with questions from Moe residents who are furious with Labor’s inaction.
“Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage roads, and it’s regional Victorians who pay the price.”
