New research conducted for the state government shows 91 per cent of roads across Victoria are now classified as being in “poor” or “very poor” condition.
It has also been revealed more than 540 roads across the state are subject to speed reductions because the road surface is so dangerous.
The Nationals Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, said Labor’s 45 per cent cut to the roads maintenance budget since 2020 was directly to blame for our crumbling roads.
“Not only did data from the National Transport Research Organisation show that 91 per cent of roads are in either poor or very poor condition, but alarmingly it showed there were no roads classified as good or very good,” Mr Cameron said.
“Despite knowing this, the Labor Government still cut the maintenance spend by a further 25 per cent in this year’s State Budget.”
Mr Cameron said Valley residents were also being inconvenienced by speed reductions on local roads which have been implemented because the road conditions are so poor.
“Data provided to Parliament by the Department of Transport shows there are 480 roads in regional Victoria subject to speed limit reductions or other warnings because the road surface is so bad,” he said.
“This includes Hazelwood Road which has been subject to various speed reductions over the last five years and littered with ‘rough surface’ signs.
“Instead of telling motorists to drive to the conditions on a rapidly deteriorating network of roads, Labor needs to get serious about ensuring the safety of regional Victorians.”
“Savage road funding cuts must be reversed in the upcoming budget.”
