The Allan Labor Government has claimed to be embarking on a “road maintenance blitz” again, for a seventh consecutive year, despite all evidence that proves road maintenance is at an all-time low.
The Nationals’ Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, said it was another example of shameless spin from Labor.
“Every single person in Victoria, except those within this government it seems, acknowledges our roads are atrocious – a network of potholes and shoddy patchwork,” Mr Cameron said.
“Still, Labor has recycled a rubbish media release claiming it’s embarking on a ‘road maintenance blitz’ – the same press release they’ve pumped out for the last seven years.
“If there’s a road maintenance blitz every year, why are our roads crumbling and getting worse? Why are ‘rough surface’ signs everywhere across regional Victoria?
“Labor’s own data shows 91 per cent of roads surveyed were in poor or very poor condition, and no amount of spin can disguise the fact Labor has abandoned roads in regional Victoria.
“The reality is this government slashed road maintenance funding, and the road repair target has been cut from more than 1 million square metres to just 70,000 square metres this financial year.
“Our cars must be roadworthy, but our roads are far from carworthy, and the condition of regional roads is now the biggest safety concern for motorists.
“The Nationals will keep fighting for safer roads because communities deserve better than recycled press releases and broken promises.
“Labor can’t manage roads and Victorians are paying the price.”
